I'm not going to ask for a show of hands here, but I'm pretty sure one of the main reasons you're taking this course is that you're looking forward to propagating plants you can take with you at the end of the semester - which is totally fine with me!
Of course, in addition to propagating your own plants I hope you'll find the lab exercises to be helpful in reinforcing the learning outcomes for the class. For learning to happen, however, please . . . . slow down and really experience what is going on as you work through each exercise (though I realize that's not always easy to do on Friday afternoons;-) Take plenty of notes, take plenty of measurements if you think they might be helpful to you, and take plenty of pictures/video clips. Also make sure to do the suggested readings and start looking for references as you won't know until several weeks into the semester which lab exercises I would like for you to prepare a report for assessment.
To make the labs more efficient, I've recorded several dozen instructional videos for you to watch before coming to each Friday afternoon lab session. That way, upon arrival you'll be ready to jump right into the "doing" part of the lab (and can rewatch the "how-to" videos on your phone, tablet, etc., as needed throughout the session)!
To further frame/reinforce your thinking while working through the exercises, we'll spend part of the second lab session developing a rubric that we'll use for the two lab assignments you will submit for assessment before the end of the semester. While I certainly have some ideas for this rubric, I look forward to your participation in this process. To jump-start this conversation, you can download a rough rubric outline by clicking here.
