Chapter 6 - Techniques of Seed Production and Handling

Propagating/growing plants from seed is usually (much) less expensive on a per plant basis (and in many instances far more practical) than any of the clonal propagation techniques (cuttings, grafting, budding, layering, etc.). Therefore, for more plants are propagated by seed than by clonal means.

In this chapter, we'll be introduced to strategies and techniques for producing, harvesting, processing and storing seed in ways that maximizes seed viability and vigor for extended periods of time.

Assigned Readings:
"Hartmann & Kester’s Plant Propagation: Principles and Practices"

Supplemental Readings:
"Plant Propagation: Concepts and Laboratory Exercises"
Chapter 38 - Seed Production, Processing, and Analysis
Chapter 40 - Producing Seedlings and Bedding Plants
Chapter 41 - Practices to Promote Seed Germination: Scarification, Stratification, and Priming
Supplemental Online Resources:
"Woody Plant Seed Manual" (link)
Should you need to research the propagation of a wide range of woody plants (trees, shrubs and vines), this can be an excellent - and fairly exhaustive - resource.
"Article 9 of the Agriculture and Markets Law, Chapter 631 Relating to INSPECTION AND SALE OF SEEDS" (link)
Every state has laws governing the sale of seed. This resource outlines the laws of New York State that governs the testing and sale of seed.
"International Seed Testing Association" (link)
The stated goal of this professional association is to insure "uniformity in seed quality evaluation worldwide." If this goal is accomplished, seed trade around the world becomes easier and can play a key role in global food security.
"Svalbard Global Seed Vault Factsheet" (link)
Both hopeful - and a bit frightening - this "doomsday" structure built into the side of frozen mountain on a remote north Atlantic island currently contains seed of more than 850,000 varieties.
