Chapter Three - The Propagation Environment

Before starting to read this chapter and watch the associated video content, I want you to take a minute or two to list all of the different environmental factors you believe might effect the success - or failure, of your propagation efforts. Go ahead, I'll wait . . . . . . .

So, what did you come up with?

Possibly light (intensity and duration), temperature (both air temperature and soil temperature), moisture (soil moisture and relative humidity), etc.? Also keep in mind that we not only need to consider the environmental conditions within the propagation system, but also the same conditions that may be affecting the plants from which we obtain our propagation material (i.e., "propagules").

We'll discuss all of the above at various points throughout the semester, but in Chapter Three we're going to focus primarily on propagation media, or "edaphic" (soil) factors.
